Blue Buffalo make some decent foods, and it really helps they’re readily available in Petsmart. This review is for Blue Buffalo Wilderness (Chicken), but the other flavors in the brand are on par.
Wilderness is a premium range from Blue aimed at active outdoor cats, so we expect this to be pretty good. Let’s take a look…
There’s a decent amount of protein in this food at 40% which is great, especially for young and active cats. The top three ingredients are deboned chicken, chicken meal, and turkey meal which is wonderful and ensures the protein in this food is coming from the right sources. This is what we like to see – cat’s are carnivores!
The fat content in the food is slightly higher than other offerings from Blue, so keep that in mind if you’re feeding it to a lap cat who doesn’t get out much.
Next up we find potato starch. This will make up most of the carb content of the food, so I deduce there’s a fair amount of this ingredient in the food. Cat’s don’t need potato (or potato starch), so this ingredient only serves the purpose of bulking up the food. Other grain free foods have better ingredients in this respect (try Freedom as an alternative).
Fish meal as the fifth ingredient adds essential oils and omega fats to the food, but I prefer to see a named fish meal in a food. Simply including “fish meal” is open to interpretation as to the content and quality of the ingredient. Again, with other top brand grain free foods we find better sources of fish. Other products from Blue have named fish meals in the food so I question why it isn’t the case here.
The other ingredients in this food are good, with a mixture of vegetables and fruits as well as eggs★★★★ Good source of protein, free of shell..
It’s a solid food so I’ll give it four stars.
What’s good about this food….
Excellent choices of protein with a range of fruits and veggies.
….and what’s not so good.
Potato starch isn’t a bad ingredient, but given the price I’d prefer not to see it in the top 5. A named fish meal would be better.
