Bil-Jac Grain Free

I wasn’t impressed with the original offerings from Bil-Jac, but their grain free food is an improvement. There’s a distinct lack of by-products and corn in this food which is great in comparison to their other foods. We still find brewers rice in the top ingredients which is a shame.

Chicken is the top ingredient which is good, with Menhaden fish meal in 3rd which is a bonus source of protein and essential oils. Pea starch is the second ingredient which is ok and will constitute a fair proportion of the 30% protein in the food. Pea protein isn’t as digestible as meat protein, but it’s a reasonable inclusion.

The 4th and 5th ingredients really let the food down. Brewers rice is a waste product, used in dog foods to bulk them up. Beet pulp is a cheap ingredient that provides fibre and artificially hardens stools. It’s a slightly controversial ingredient and there are better alternatives.

If you’re on a tight budget then this food has some merits, and it’s definitely better than the other foods on offer from Bil-Jac.
