Halo Spot's Stew

Halo Spot’s Stew

I first found this food at Petco, so decided to take a look at it and see if this was a quality pick up. Somewhat surprisingly, it really is a good product.

Chicken is the first ingredient, which is good. Meat should always be number one, never grains. Take note that there’s no meat meal in this food which makes it low on meat content. It’s more of a plant-based kibble, with eggs and peas making up the bulk of protein rather than meat proteins. I believe Wholesome Chicken is targeted more at indoor cats, which explains the low meat protein in this food.

Eggs are found as the 2nd ingredient, which is very high, but are a very good protein source (among the best). Pea Protein is next which is another good source of protein that has become increasingly popular in recent years. I note this food contains chelated minerals attached to the proteins. This is done for easier absorption of the nutrients in the minerals. It’s a relatively expensive inclusion but it’s good to see and a sign of a good product. The main grain they use is oats, which is a good choice for digestibility.

The inclusions of chicken liver and salmon later on are welcomed, as are flaxseed and salmon oil for heart healthy fatty acids. There are enough fruits and veggies in this to grow a garden. The only question is, is having only 1 meat source in the first 6 ingredients enough?? It’d be nice to see the salmon moved up or another meat included, but it’s a small quibble. This is a good food if you’re looking for a predominantly vegetable based kibble.

Where to buy?

Halo Spot's Stew (Wholesome Chicken)

What’s good about this food….

Chicken is first ingredient, whole eggs, peas are prominent, many fruits and veggies used, salmon oil & flaxseed.

….and what’s not so good.

Only having one meat product in the first 6 ingredients may not be enough.
