Blue Buffalo WildernessBlue Wilderness, by the Blue Buffalo Company, is one of the best dog foods I’ve found thus far. Oddly enough, I can only seem to find it at Petsmart, which has a pretty bad track record of the food it carries. Perhaps they have some sort of contract with them.

Within the first 5 ingredients, we see 3 named meat ingredients, and 2 of those are meat “meals” which only adds to the amount of good protein in this food. They use peas for the main source of carbohydrates and fibre, which is good to see, and this will also boost the protein of the food. They used to use more potato so this is an improvement on their original recipe. Tapioca starch is included as an additional gluten-free source of carbohydrates.

Not only is the meat content more than enough, but they include carrots, sweet potatoes, blueberries, and cranberries to give a great mix of fruits and vegetables. This only further gives this food credibility as one of the best foods you can give your dog. What’s more, they are mindful to use flaxseed as a fat source and for Omega fatty acids that promote heart health. If that wasn’t enough, the array of vitamins is plentiful.

This is very recommended if you shop at Petsmart, but just be prepared to pay.

Where to buy?

What’s good about this food….

Decent meat content with 3 quality meats at the top of the ingredients list, with 2 of them being meat meals. Many fruits and vegetables used, flax is present. Tons of vitamins.

….and what’s not so good.

Nothing to report.

  1. I have a question for you – what is your opinion between Natural Balance Salmon/Potato and Wilderness Chicken Healthy weight or Wilderness Salmon? We have had allergy issues, but think food is a small part because it only flares up about twice per year. We usually mix Wilderness Salmon with healthy weight, cuz my dobie is 110 pounds, but he is a beast and a King! lol. Vet said try Natural Balance Salmon/potato. I feel like he needs to eat more of it to be satisfied and not so sure if it is good for his coat, but I could be overthinking things. Tell me what to do! LOL

    • Hi Shelley, you could always rotate between the two! I see rotation of foods to be a great way of balancing a diet and adding variety.

  2. Would love to have an updated opinion on Blue Buffalo. We have been feeding it to our dog for several years, but I just noticed lots of complaints online. I read the company may have sold. Any recent info appreciated.

    • Hi Rachel, I try and keep the reviews based on the labeling and guaranteed analysis, but always recommend reading the comments as they say as much about the brand as the review does itself.

  3. Blue Buffalo has had recalls on several products. These include incidents of chemical and biological contamination. These recalls represent a company with poor or non-existent Quality Control. There are enough other quality foods out there that I am not going to gamble with my pets’ health.

  4. I was wondering how you rated Rachael Rays dog food I’ve heard really good things about it and want to make sure it suffices for my dog… He has been on it for a little over a year now and feel really good about it … Plus I’ve heard and read that as well. I would like to hear what you have to say thanks…

  5. you can find these ar pet mini mart in oregon and all boxed chain stores

  6. Hi….. I started looking at your website today for the first time and I like it a lot. My only disappointment is that the food I started to use for our puppy is not on your site. I use Blue Buffalo’s Life Protection formula. I noticed you reviewed both the Wilderness & grain free formula’s. Any chance you be able to review the LP formula in the near future? I ‘d be very interested in your opinion. Thank you! Tom

    • Hi Tom, Life Protection is on par, with excellent meat ingredients backed up by quality grains and the same range of vitamins, minerals, fruits, and veggies we find in other Blue Buffalo foods. I can’t foresee any problems feeding Life Protection Puppy.

  7. This is the best tasting dog food I’ve ever eaten. Only problem is that my dog is starving because I don’t save any for him.

    • Hi Joe, I personally recommend you stop eating Blue Buffalo without mixing in a little gravy.

      I hope this helps,

  8. I have read a lot of reviews that say it has too much protein in it which our dogs are not used to. Many dogs have gotten pancreatitis and some even died. So I have been afraid to put my dogs on it.

    • Hi Nina,

This isn’t something I personally believe, and there’s little substantial fact. A dog’s native diet is high protein, and the same is generally the case with wet or raw based diets. The same applies to cats. Personally I see more harm in feeding an animal a product based on sub-standard ingredients and fillers.

  9. Remember anything made by the big bad cos will not be smiled on by this or any other website like this.

  10. I feed my black lab the Salmon or Duck flavors of this food when I find them. I can usually find it either at PetSmart or at a Farm-supply store (by us that would be Rural King). I used to feed him Iams Naturals Chicken & Rice formula, but with the recalls I got scared and switched him. I’m glad I did. He seems a lot healthier and happier on this food. His coat is a lot better with this food and the fish oil supplements we give him.

  11. I am not sure where you got the nutritional values from on the dog food. Blue Buffalo website lists ingredients and none has what you say they have. The most I saw was 3 meat products in top 6 and 1 of those was water based meat not a meal. Not that it is not a good food but your reccomendation of its nutritional values seems based off incorrect data..

    • Blue can be purc at any grain and feed store and lot cheaper

    • Hi John, thanks for your comment. Pet food ingredients change over time and it’s hard for me to maintain all the reviews on this website. Blue Buffalo have changed their ingredients only recently so thanks for bringing it to my attention and I’ll update accordingly. It seems they’ve removed whitefish and salmon meal, as well as Herring Oil, which is a shame as all three are very good quality protein and omega sources. They’ve made turkey meal more prominent which goes some way to balance the change. It’s still very good as far as the ingredients go, but I preferred the previous ingredients.
