Canidae PURE Cat Food Review
Canidae PURE cat food is the most premium offering from the Canidae company in America. It’s sold in many countries worldwide and has a great track record of reliability and decent quality.
Being grain-free and limited ingredient it could be a good option for cats suffering intolerances, itchy skin, or incessant scratching.
But is it a great cat food? Read this review and you’ll find out the truth…
Canidae PURE review (for cats)
There’s a range of Canidae cat foods targeted at digestive health, joints, and indoor cats, but if you read that review you might find yourself back here as the PURE range is the better option.
Simply put, cats are obligate carnivores, so when I start seeing a load of grain and vegetable ingredients I question whether the reason is profit rather than nutrition. When I studied pet nutrition it was clear fact that cats need a diet comprised mostly of animal ingredients, and simply witnessing their eating habits confirms this.
Let’s take a look at the chicken recipe…
We find potato as one of the top ingredients in Canidae PURE cat food, which is like, yeah, not something a cat would eat. That said, all kibbles have some form of starchy carb to hold the kibble together, and thankfully in this food it’s the only carbohydrate.
It’s nice to see three of the top five ingredients (the main ones in this food) are meats – chicken, chicken meal, and turkey meal. This tells us a decent amount of the 37% protein in the food comes from readily digestible meat proteins. Your cat will thank you for this.
The fifth of those top five ingredients is peas, which although not ideally suited to cats, will add protein and fiber. I’m sure for Canidae it serves to keep production costs down, but that also makes it affordable. You can buy kibbles with more meat, but for a much higher price – I’m thinking Acana / Orijen here as an example.
20% fat from animal sources is good to see too. Chicken fat in this case as a decent inclusion.
We’ve covered the main ingredients but the good stuff doesn’t end there. Most manufacturers add a load of rubbish further down the ingredients, but with Canidae PURE we find lamb meal and menhaden fish meal as yet more animal inclusions.
Menhaden fish meal is worth a special mention as this will really help boost your cat’s skin and coat, not to mention organ health and wellbeing. It’s a great source of natural omega fatty acids (omega 3 / omega 6), and something your cat should definitely have in their diet.
Salmon oil tucked away in the depths of the ingredients is another great source of omega fatty acids and a quality animal inclusion rather than cheaper alternatives (canola oil for example).
Canidae PURE cat food is one of the best commercial products I’ve seen over the years, and I hardly ever hear anything bad said about the food. It’s at the high end price wise, but still cheaper than others.
Compare the ingredients of Canidae PURE to something in the supermarket and you’ll see a world of difference.
Recommended.

We just saved an abandoned cat.Renters were evicted twice from two different homes in our neighbourhood! We feed our Golden Retriever Canidae and all those we have had over the years. So now looking to see what is best to feed this cat. The neighbours said its name is Thomas, but it turned out to be a female AND pregnant too! OH my. We have a long expensive road ahead of us, for doing the right thing by this cat. We live in Florida now (from Hawai’i) no spay or neuter clinics here, I am appalled by this!
Good on you for taking in this cat in need.
Go to this website to find low cost spay/neuter clinics: http://www.flaspay.com/
Alternatively, any veterinarian at a regular clinic can do this, and some will provide at lower cost if it is a rescue animal.
Speed is of the essence. If you are unable to care for the kittens, an abortion can be performed at the same time as the spay. It becomes riskier the longer you wait, and at a certain point the veterinarian will not/will not be able to perform the surgery, and you will have a litter of kittens. I’ve had a bit of experience with this taking care of a small family of stray cats in my city.
As for food, I’ve fed Purina, Hill’s, Wysong Vitality, Canidae, and Canidae Pure. On flavor, Purina is their top choice, but they happily eat all the others, and I’m most impressed by the ingredients and manufacturing process for Wysong and Canidae. I’m going to move forward with the regular Canidae, as its not overly expensive (via amazon), has good ingredients, and is manufactured in the USA.
