Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul

Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul

The thing I love about the Chicken Soup foods are that they have their priorities in order (meat first) and that they throw an entire garden’s worth of fruits and veggies into the food. It’s quite the eclectic list of ingredients here…

First, they have 4 meat products to start the product, which is among the best you will see anywhere. The grains they use afterwards are the types we like to see, such as rice and oatmeal. There aren’t any cheap fillers like corn, soy or wheat.

There are potatoes for a high-quality carb source, and eggs for further protein. Duck and salmon are somewhat far down the list, but they only add to the variety of meat sources in this food. Plus, look at the fruits and veggies: carrots, peas, apples, tomatoes, blueberries and spinach. It’s hard to beat that.

All of this in a food that is VERY reasonably priced!

Where to buy?

What’s good about this food….

Awesome meat content, no fillers or by-prodcuts, quality grains, flaxseed, many fruits and veggies.

….and what’s not so good.

Nothing.

  1. I started feeding this food 3 weeks ago My lab pup and it do not agree . One thing I may say is that this should be updated Dated 2013 and also I do not believe millet, white rice or brown rice make a quality ingredient in dog food .They are cheap fillers. Tomato pomace is a questionable ingredient and a filler .Potato is a filler also .Which allot of dogs are now allergic to .I Would like to see more Quality Ingredients .Also $42.00-$55.00 is NOT cheap for 30lbs of dog food . That has these ingredients in them and is made by a company that has allot of recalls .I would love to see the reviews be more realistic of the food and cost it is not $$ it is more like a $$$ .My opinion from my research due to 3 dogs having so many food allergies .And having to read and research things on my own I do not think these are up to date on what animal nutritionists have shown is good for our animals or cheap fillers . I also would love to see the dog food companies step up and be more responsible in making quality foods .I feel like I should have taken stock in my vets office . Thank you !

  2. my dog a 80lbs lab pit mix loves this food. i have been feeding him this food for 4 years. everyone ask why his coat is so shinny i say its the food.

  3. I had been feeding Chicken Soup Senior to my German shepherd for many years with wonderfull results. All of the sudden, the company changed its formula, increased the fiber content and changed the name to Mature Diet. This was probably to justify a downsizing of the bag size, which effectively increased the price. Would have continued feeding despite sneaky price increase, but it no longer agreed with my old girl.

Will never buy another Chicken Soup product again.. Talk about fixing what isn’t broken!

From my earlier post, I hope you can recognize that I do like this Dog Food. My dogs adjusted to it easily and have never shown digestive problems or general condition issues,,such as: coat, skin, etc. I would like to know how often you update your information, however, since the cost did escalate too much in my estimation. I probably wouldn’t have grouched much about that if the company had found a “middle road” and kept the larger bag. I really can’t abide the darn packaging now. It is terribly hard to open and reseal the bag. Finally, do you share your findings with the manufacturers so they might benefit in their marketing or is this just a resource for buyers to select appropriate pet food and to express their feelings?

    • Hi William,

Some of the manufacturers do follow these reviews and contact me occassionally. A few have adjusted their ingredients accordingly, so it’s nice to have some influence. I try and keep the reviews as up to date as possible but unfortunately it isn’t an easy task as I have a day job too!

With Chicken Soup I think the important thing to note is it’s still a good food. It was very good value for money before, now not as much.

I have been using Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover’s Soul-Adult for several years. I feed four dogs one weighing about 30 lbs and the other three about 70-80 pounds. I also feed the Cat version to three cats.
The quality of the food is very good and until the recent changes, the pricing was good, too. The changes have been disconcerting. The bag size decreased five pounds to 30 lb size with no reduction in price. That was an unreasonable price gain in my estimation. The packaging changed to a plastic bag with no easy way to open. I have to literally hack the bag open with a knife and then it won’t reseal. I haven’t stopped buying Chicken Soul for the Soul foods but I am disappointed that the company didn’t think more about customer needs and loyalty.

  6. I have feeding this product to my pets for over 2 years. They are healthy and energetic and the price is very reasonable.
