In this day and age you’d expect every company to have a website, but I’m unable to find one for EverPet. I find that worrying. I’ve read a lot of bad press and worrying stories about this food, which is even more worrying. It’s manufactured by the J.M. Smucker Company who produce a few poor quality foods such as 9 Lives and Special Kitty (Walmart brand). The food is available from Dollar General stores, and I believe imported by them from China.
Looking at the ingredients, this food has a lot in common with Purina Beneful. That’s definitely not a good thing as we all know how awful that is.
Let’s take a look…
The prime ingredient is corn, one of the worst ingredients to see in a dog food with little to know nutritional benefit for dogs. It’s backed up with meat and bone meal which could be anything (and likely nothing pleasant). Beneful also has corn as the main ingredient backed up with a by-product, but to credit where credit us due at least with Beneful it’s a named meat product (chicken). With EverPet the meat is open to interpretation, and in all likelihood would be hard to digest. Anonymous meat products can be sourced from supermarket waste, road kill, or even diseased animals. Sounds awful doesn’t it? It is. I’m coming to the conclusion this food is worse than Beneful.
We also find more by-products in this food as well as other poor ingredients including corn gluten meal, corn distillers dried grain, wheat, animal digest, food colorings, and other rubbish. Soybeans should never be in a dog food; they can’t be digested and can cause bloating or even death. If I had to feed this to my dog, I’d rather have her put to sleep. This food is dreadful.
Where to buy?
What’s good about this food….
A resounding nothing.
….and what’s not so good.
Far too much corn and wheat. The meat content could be anything. Animal digest is used, as well as artificial colors.
Ingredients:
Whole grain corn, meat and bone meal, animal fat preserved with mixed tocopherols (form of vitamin E), corn gluten meal, poultry by-product meal, rice bran, soybean meal, corn distillers dried grain, whole grain wheat, animal digest, calcium carbonate, salt, barley, calcium phosphate, potassium chloride, l-lysine monohydrochloride, choline chloride, zinc sulfate, vitamin E supplement, zinc proteinate, ferrous sulfate, added color (red 40, yellow 5, blue 2,yellow 6), dl-methionine, manganese sulfate, manganese proteinate, niacin, vitamin A supplement, copper sulfate, calcium pantothenate, copper proteinate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, vitamin B12 supplement, thiamine mononitrate, vitamin D3 supplement, riboflavin supplement, calcium iodate, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source ofvitamin K activity), folic acid, biotin, cobalt carbonate, sodium selenite.

I can post pictures of my kitten and and Rottweiler I get complements everywhere I go.. and when someone comes over they are very impressed. Don’t be American idiots do you really think they have a whole different Factory for dried out pet food? Chicken is chicken and I feed them real chicken every time we eat it. Meat is meat this is just a filler….
Honestly they’re all microwaved dry food there is absolutely no blueberries left in the blueberries and there are no apples left in the apples. Don’t be so foolish if you want your kitten or dogs eat healthy it’s what it’ add fresh things into it. Tuna “real tuna ect.. 40% protein rate are there kitten food is pretty good……
Are you fucking retarded? Tuna is one of the worst things to feed your cats, it can give them mercury poisoning if they eat too much, and it has 0 nutritional value for them.
I just bought this cat food the price was not bad however I’m worried if they will eat it my cats its in a large blue bag ever pet cat essentials beef chicken and salmon… I need to know if they don’t like it …is it an easy process to return pets food for your money back?
Hi Sumayah, if the bag is opened it’s unlikely you’ll get a refund. If you haven’t opened it you should be ok.
I just bought this for the first time two days ago . . And with in that two days all three of my dogs have been throwing up . . These are young healthy dogs and now my 1 yrd old lab won’t play because he feels horrible. … please don’t buy this food. .
Can someone tell me about other symptoms . . .so I can watch for tbem please.
OMG mine 3 dogs too and to top it off at the bottom of the bag it was moldy and had maggots in it, this is the first time I ever got it too
I just found this site and have always tried to be cautious about what I feed my dogs. Up until 4 years ago I thought some well known brands were ok and steered away from cheap dog food period. I started buying a somewhat expensive brand of dog food and without all the filler that they don’t need they eat far less so the price really made up for it. Not only was the cost almost equal but I have the peace of mind knowing they’re eating something safe. My only dog at that time had been stressing and started losing hair around her tail. After switching, her hair grew back and grew back so full and soft. After switching my mom’s dog over she has been far healthier and happier so she must feel better. She used to have all sorts of health problems. She still has some due to her breed and issues she’s had from birth but they’re not as often or as bad.
As for this crap, I cringe everytime I see it at Dollar General. Then it breaks my heart knowing that a lot of people are feeding their pets this crap. I’m sorry but the price point should be what makes people suspicious of this dog food so there’s no excuse that someone didn’t know any better. Would you feed your toddler knock off food that is way under priced? If you really wanted to wouldn’t you research it first? Lucky for Americans they don’t have to choose since there’s no requirement to be a responsible adult before making babies so everyone else’s taxes are paying to ensure that these babies eat and eat proper foods. As for animals, again there’s no requirements before owning an animal but there is no help to ensure they’re being properly cared for. There aren’t even requirements of what to feed an animal as long as it’s considered food and within reach of the animal it’s considered appropriate.
If you can’t afford a pet, don’t get a pet. It’s not fair to the innocent animal. It’s not just their food every week but also their vet bills. Another option that isn’t paid for by the US Government like they do unnecessary children. Accidents happen no matter how cautious of a pet owner you are. Animals get sick just like people. You never know what may happen but are you able to provide the necessary medical attention they may need? Most of us all love animals BUT if you really love an animal you know when the time isn’t right to get a pet.
I bought the Everpet puppy as that was the only brand available at the time. I live in a rural area and at the time wasn’t able to travel the 30 miles to a different store. She had this for two days and I came home tonight after buying something else to find that she had passed away. This company needs to stop killing animals with their subpar product! I would NEVER have bought this had I been given the choice. Dollar general should be ashamed of themselves for selling this crap! I feel so guilty for not taking the time to go to town and getting something else.
I just found out about this dog food I’ve been using it since I moved up here in Feb of 2014. So far my dogs are fine I just bought 2 bags of food for them I plan on taking the food back to dollar general in the morning and getting something different. After hearing this I will never buy this dog food again. I love my dogs like my kids and this would be like feeding my kids poison it isn’t happening. I would recommend to every pet owner out there NOT to buy this food.
I’m pretty sure it just killed my dog I had ran out of dog food and went bought something cheap. She was fine until I fed her this dog food for a could of days. She died with in 5 hours of symptoms. Everpet dog food should not be allowed to be sold and dollar general should be held acountable
Absolutely right I will sue them if mine die
Has anyone heard anything about recalls on this dog food? My friend had her healthy 2yr old dog eating this food for a couple of days and then he just randomly died. I’m trying to find out if this has happened to anyone else.
My cat loves everpet catfood will eat nothing else. If they sold out she want eat period, now I’m concerned maybe it’s addictive! Is that possible? I’ve tried whiskies, 9 lives all name brands will not eat. What should I do? She seems perfectly healthy…..
Hey Susan! When you want to get her off one brand mix a little of the new type in with the old. Say you give her half a cup of food. Put about 3/8 of the old & 1/8 of the new and mix it up really good. About a week or two later, put about 1/2 & 1/2. Then do about 1/4 to 3/4 and then finally all of it the new food. Should fix that problem!
Hi Susan, cats become accustomed to a food more than addicted, meaning they may get temporarily confused if you give them something different.
All I want to know is who makes Ever Pet cat food
My cat just died from this stuff. The other was very sick but pulled through and survived. It’s “distributed by Dolgencorp” out of Tennessee. They claim it is made in the US. Google says otherwise.
