Goodlife Recipe (Salmon & Brown Rice)

Note: Refer to the comments as recent Goodlife recipes are a definite improvement (I’m happy to say).
I used to feed this stuff before I knew better. I do feel bad in retrospect, but I can at least say it isn’t quite as bad as Meow Mix or Friskies, so this food has that going for it.
It contains a lot of corn and by-products as its main meat product. That’s never good. At least salmon is the 5th ingredient though, I’ll give it that. Most cheap products don’t even have it that high. They do use whole grain rice as well, which is another plus. Dried peas are a solid veggie and a good source of fiber.
Now I’m making it sound like a pretty good food aren’t I?? My mistake, because it really isn’t. The fact remains that it contains a hell of a lot of worthless corn and digusting by-products. It still has wheat flour and brewers yeast in it as well.
But you know, I’m still happy to see that they put spinach and tomatoes and carrots in it as well. Their location in the ingredient list is low, but typically these types of ingredients are somewhat low. Plus, they did at least fortify it with minerals and vitamins.
I guess in the end, if Science Diet gets two stars, so does this. It’s better than Science Diet by a hair, too.
Where to buy?
What’s good about this food….
Salmon is 5th, a few vegetables included, rice mentioned twice.
….and what’s not so good.
Corn is 2 of first 3 ingredients, by-products are main protein source, wheat is mentioned twice, salt is too far up list.
Ingredients:
Ground corn, chicken-by-product meal, corn gluten meal, animal fat, salmon, whole grain brown rice, natural poultry flavor, dried peas, dried beet pulp, wheat flour, rice, brewers dried yeast, salt, potassium chloride, wheat gluten, choline chloride, iron oxide, titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate, dried spinach, dried tomatoes, dried carrots, skim milk powder, dicalcium phosphate, taurine, dl-methionine, minerals (zinc sulfate, copper sulfate, manganese sulfate, potassium iodide), vitamins (dl-alpha tocopherol acetate [source of vitamin e], folic acid, vitamin a acetate, l-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate [source of vitamin c], vitamin b12 supplement, niacin, riboflavin supplement [vitamin b2], d-calcium pantothenate, thiamine mononitrate [vitamin b1], vitamin d3 supplement, biotin, pyridoxine hydrochloride [vitamin b6] ), vegetable oil (source of linoleic acid), chlorophyll, naturally preserved with mixed tocopherols, marigold meal.

I have five of my own cats, and I also foster for two rescue groups. Of my five personal cats, I have two with digestive issues. I’ve been feeding Wellness grain free canned and Taste of the Wild dry grain free. I recently made a gradual switch to Good Life, since a bigger bag of it was less expensive than the 15 lb. bag of TOTW that I usually get. The two with digestive issues have either diarrhea or vomiting, and one that normally doesn’t have digestive issues is throwing up now too. I’ve taken up the dry food and am only feeding the canned food until I get another bag of TOTW. Cats don’t need wheat flour or corn in their diets, so I won’t be buying Good Life again.
I’ve been using goodlife brand cat food for almost 5 years.
I like that it doesn’t have artificial colors or ingredients.
I mix the indoor, chicken flavor, and the salmon flavor for a variety of taste.
Lately I’ve been having a problem getting the salmon flavor. Is it being discontinued?
The salmon recipe is still available. Here it is on Amazon – http://amzn.to/29Fg8lf

Hi could you review Nutrients first it’s made by presidents choice I am feeding salmon and brown rice. Thanks
Hi. I’ve been feeding my 2 cats Special Kitty food for most of their 4-year life, and have recently been looking into switching brands. I’d like to switch to something somewhat healthier but since I’m still definitely on a budget, am not looking at the high-end expensive ones. I found an indoor formula dry catfood from Goodlife at the store which somewhat impressed me with its ingredients for the price (eleven dollars & 90-something cents for a 7-lb bag.)
Ingredients:
Chicken, chicken meal, brown rice, brewers rice, chicken byproduct meal, dried plain beet pulp, powdered cellulose, natural flavor, animal fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), brewers dried yeast, potassium chloride, dried peas, salt, taurine, caramel color, DL-methionne, dried tomato, dried blueberry, dried sweet potato, dried apple, dried cranberry, dried spinach, choline chloride, dried carrots, mixed tocopherols, vitamins (vitamin E supplement, Niacin, Vitamin A supplement, Vitamin B12 supplement, thiamine mononitrate [vitaminB1], riboflavin supplement [vitamin B2], d-calcium pantothenate, pyridoxine hydrochloride [vitamin B6], vitamin D3 supplement, folic acid, biotin), minerals (zinc sulfate, copper sulfate, manganese sulfate, potassium iodide), yucca schidigera extract, sodium copper chlorophyllin.

What do you think? I gather it’s still not totally GREAT but am hoping it would be a decent improvement for my cats. Since it says “new” on this food in the store, I’m keeping an eye on it for a little bit to make sure the price doesn’t skyrocket. I’d hate to start my cats on it and then have to switch them again right away.
And as I mentioned, I’m thinking I’ll be switching my cats to a partial wet-food diet as well. I would probably use Special Kitty wet food as wet food seems to be so very expensive- unless there’s an alternative brand you’d recommend which is better but for a pretty similar price. I’ve heard it’s important for cats to get some wet food in their diet, even if it’s cheap wet food, for the moisture.
Thank you very much for your time.
Hi Krista, that Goodlife recipe is a great improvement on both Special Kitty and the Goodlife recipe reviewed on this page. It has some downsides (brewers rice, by-products, added coloring, etc), but also a lot of positives (chicken and chicken meal is nice to see as the main ingredients plus added fruits and veggies). For the price I’d say go for it, and I always recommend a mixture of foods (wet or dry) for a varied diet, and yes wet food is good for adding moisture to a diet.
Thanks, I appreciate it!
