Petcurean Go! Fit + Free

Petcurean Go! Fit + Free

I was on the fence with the Now Fresh Grain Free offering from Petcurean, but I have to say their Go! range is much better. This review is for the Grain Free Chicken, Turkey, and Duck recipe which is a high protein food.

This food is packed with meat, which is great as cats are carnivores. It’s also great to see a meat meal (chicken meal) as the prime ingredient, which is what you’d expect from a high-end food. This is backed up with a range of chicken, turkey, and duck meats and meals. It surprises me they’ve added peas and whole eggs to further enhance the amount of protein in this food, a whopping 48%.

There’s all manner of fruits and vegetables in this food, and good quality ones at that. A slight down side is phosphoric acid is used, and this is something I don’t like to see in a cat food. It’s an acidifier used to ensure the urinary pH of the food is balanced.

If you’re after a high-protein food for an active cat then this is a good option. It’s between 4 and 5 stars but I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt.

Where to buy?

What’s good about this food….

Excellent range of protein sources, backed up with fruits, veggies, and potatoes for carbs.

….and what’s not so good.

Nothing worth mentioning, but keep in mind this is a high protein food best fed to active cats.

  1. Which is the best petcurean dry catfood for my diabetic cat and others that are not diabetic? I would like to feed all my cats the same food. Also I want to keep them on a food that is good for their urinary systems.

    • Hi Laura, you can always rotate between foods – something I recommend. In regard to their urinary systems it’s worth ensuring they have a sufficient intake of clean water.

  2. What Does the texture look like for this food. My cat seems to like the ones that are different shapes. I made the mistake of giving her Party Mix treats and now she only wants to eat that. She also likes Meow Mix and that is not good either. So I am going to try a sample of this food . Hope it works.

    • Hi Carol, cats often take a couple of weeks to get used to a new food, so you can ween them off gradually. Try contacting Petcurean and ask for a sample.

  3. My cat who is about 12 used to pick and pull out her fur. I put her on perina beyond and she got better and gained weight yea! Her symptoms returned and she quit eating, like she knew this food was making her sick. I was tured to GO buy an employee at a pet food store. She took to the food right away ! It was her first day eating GO and that evening she was not licking. I hope things continue to improve!

  4. Ranmaru ,…….. even though there’s peas and potatoes in go ! Fit + Free it is an excellent food. Cats do NOT need carbohydrates,……. BUT, this food is low in carbs,….. around 15 %. The Acana has 30 % fruits and vegetables in it. It even says it on the bag. Carbs cause weight gain and a host of other health problems in cats.

    • I agree! Acana and Origen have good philosophy however all my 7 cats gained TREMENDOUS amount of weight whilst on those foods! They are atill trying to loose the food as it is so difficult to get pets (especially cats who don’t go for daily walks like dogs) to loose weight … Both acana and Origen are high in carbs and pets gain weight pls be careful. I fun petcurean senior a good fit … Cats are considered senior after 3 years of age not 7

      • Cats are considered senior between 7 and 10 years of age, not 3, I don’t know where you heard that. I’ve had cats live past 20 years of age.

  5. I don’t like the fact there’s still potatoes and peas so high on the list. That’s not great for a cat except in miniscule amounts. It’s a common filler technique with companies. Looks much better than most, overall. For those looking for other healthy alternatives, try Acana. So far, one of the very best.

  6. Hi! My cat was recently diagnosed with cystitis and I’ve made the decision to feed her only wet food. She is overweight and I’m hoping this move also helps her loss a few pounds. Could you make a recommendation on the best wet food choices that are high protein, grain free as well as free of synthetic K and carrageenan? I’m having a hard time finding many choices.
    Thank you kindly in advance!

    • Hi Toria, we don’t review wet food or make specific recommendations, but generally if a dry food on this website is rated highly then their corresponding wet food is of a similar quality. I hope that helps.

  7. Hello I am a going to high school next year and I am doing my pre ap summer work. My summer work is biology ugh she wants us to research anything so I am doing what foods my 9 year old cat and my 1 year old cat is. My 9 year old cat is having some problems and we and the vet do nip it know what is wrong but he has bloody pee sometimes it is worrying.the real reason I am commenting is because I am wondering what the best food would be to use on my project I would like no more than six at the most. Thank you for your help and I hope I get a good grade!

    • Hi Ameri, sorry to hear about your cat and I hope the vet’s given some good advice.

For your project you can pick any foods. I recommend selecting a cheap supermarket own brand, one of the big corporate brands such as Purina, then a couple of high end brands such as Orijen as well as a grain free brand. That should give you a decent variety and a lot to discuss!

  8. Which is the best petcurean dry catfood for my diabetic cat and 5 others that are not diabetic? I would like to feed all my cats the same food. Also I want to keep them on a food that is good for their urinary systems.

  9. Hello. I have recently purchased Petcurean go! chicken/turkey/duck (dry), as recommended by my local “pet health food store” (Montreal). My cat was recently Rx’d with renal insufficiency so I have been feeding her canned food exclusively, initially Hills & Royal Canin Rx’d by my vet (for low protein content), but after internet research, I have been seeing a significant amount of info stating that a high protein content is best, as cats are carnivores, and that a “wet” diet is essential… Basically, any info on the subject would be extremely appreciated! I realize this is “pet food rating”, but I’m hoping asking is worth a shot!

    Additional info:
    – age unknown as she was adopted (~10yrs). Had her for 6…
    – lost both eyes (poor thing!) to the rhino virus therefore she is quite inactive but otherwise extremely happy, healthy, affectionate & awesome!

    Many many thank yous!

    • Hi Jana, I agree wet food is a good choice for cats with renal failure. There’s little evidence about the effects of (high) protein diets for suffering cats, but phosphorous levels are an issue and can cause discomfort.

  10. I just recently bought this food because I’ve been seeing which food my cat likes best and I noticed here that you mentioned phosphoric acid, which is still in their ingredient list. How does that affect the cat? Is it bad for them?

    • Hi Amber, it isn’t really anything to be too worried about. It’s found in about 12% of dry cat foods, and used to ensure the pH level is within an ideal range. It is an additive however, and not needed if the cat or dog is eating a balanced diet. Some foods are more balanced than others.

      • I am glad to see that this food is getting good reviews but one thing that bothers me is the Chinese writing on the back of the bag. Is this food manufactured in China?

And if my cats are not very active why is feeding them high protein food not good? I was hoping it would help them lose some weight and become more active. I have 5 cats ranging in ages from 9 yrs old, and she is obese. That is why I am looking for grain free, high protein food. Protein burns fat.
The other 4 are one year apart from 5 yrs old down. All but one are a bit chubby but not fat. I would like to keep it that way. The 5 yr old is very skinny, but she has always been that way. Actually, I would love to put a drop of weight on her.
Hard to do with 5 cats.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

        J

        • this brand is Canadian. It made in Canada…

In canada we have a lot of nationality that immigrated so it is pretty normal to see at lease 3-6 languages for explanation on the bag for any kind of food or product…

        • Petcurean uses only locally sourced meats, grains and berries.
It is a fact that they were one of the only big name producers not named in the pet food wheat recall some years ago, because they did not have any foreign products in their food.

          Hi Jody,

Generally the higher the meat content in a food the more it costs, so feeding a high protein food to an inactive cat is more about budget than anything else.

Petcurean is made in Canada, but that doesn’t necessarily mean all the ingredients are sourced from Canada. It’s worth asking Petcurean direct to see how they respond?

        • I’ve been looking to switch to a higher quality cat food and have come to the conclusion that Petcurean GO! was going to be that new food. the only thing I was scared of was if any ingredients came from China.

After doing some research, I think Petcurean Dry Cat food just may be the best high quality cat food available in Canada. 🙂

Marketing director at Petcurean in Chilliwack, B.C. confirms that Petcurean is 100% China-Free. ““Chinese ingredients don’t meet the high quality standards we have in place.”

GO!, NOW FRESH and SUMMIT original recipes are sourced from North America as close to the production facility as possible, with the exception of lamb, which is from New Zealand and Australia. “We are proud to confirm we are 100 per cent China-free,” Turkington adds. “Chinese ingredients don’t meet the high quality standards we have in place.”
