Solid Gold Indigo Moon

Solid Gold Indigo Moon

Solid Gold Indigo Moon is one of my favorite foods. It’s not because it has a shiny, sparkly gold bag either, but because the ingredients are top-notch and they even have some interesting and unique ingredients you don’t often see in cat foods.

The meat content is solid. Chicken meal is first, chicken is 4th, and ocean fish meal is 7th. The protein percentage is well over 40%, which is quite high. Suffice it to say that your cat will get its fill of animal proteins from this food, which is really one of the most important barometers of a good food.

Next, look at all those oils in it. You have salmon oil, almond oil and sesame oil, which are all awesome ways to get the requisite amount of fat desired into the food. The cheapest way to do it is to put disgusting beef fat in it…the best way is what you’re seeing here. Also, it’s heart healthy and unsaturated.

Look at those fruits and vegetables: blueberries, cranberries, carrots, broccoli, and parsley. I’ve never seen the latter two in a pet food.

The best part is that it isn’t that hard to find, and it’s even carried in some major pet stores. Not only that, but it’s one of the cheaper high-end foods out there. Recommended.

Where to buy?

What’s good about this food….

Protein percentage is high, potatoes, various high quality oils, fruits and veggies.

….and what’s not so good.

Nothing.

  1. I switched from Natural Balance to Solid Gold Indigo Moon ……started out with a small amount of SG Indigo Moon mixed in with the Natural Balance. Almost immediately, they started vomiting ….not sure which cat, I have three, but they all have access to the bowls.
Thought I would check it out on the web. I do have the 4 lb bag but the new formula with 42% protein. It will be returned. Fortunately, I bought it at a very good pet food store..they will be glad to hear this about this product.

    • Ok, so I took away the Solid Gold Indigo Moon food and Persian cat was still throwing up. I had also recently added Fussie Cat dry food to their diet because my calico will not eat wet food, but seemed to love the FC dry. Persian had access to the food also. I have taken the Fussie Cat dry food away and vomitng has stopped. Also found out that Fussie Cat is made in Thialand….yuck! I’m trying the Solid gold Indigo Moon food again hoping for good results

  2. I have been feeding my cats Solid Gold since I adopted them 6mths ago. They love it. In between we tried Evo, what mess!
My only complaint is the Canola oil, canola becomes toxic once heated to high temps and is genetically modified.
I do hope Solid Gold Is reading these reviews and makes the appropriate changes.

  3. Solid Gold added several new formulations while lowering the quality (more carbs, less protein) and made the quantities smaller bags with the same or higher prices (at least on Amazon). The cool holograms bags are gone also. My cat is not very interested in the new all ages formula I tried and she was obsessed with the previous Solid Gold foods. They were a company that seemed to be doing well with a few high-quality products, why would they do this? Were they bought out by a large manufacturer?

    • Not bought out still owned by a lady named Sissy, but as with everything in the pet food world the price is always gonna go up while the quantity and quality is gonna go down in some sneaky way.

    • My 7-yr. old grew up eating Solid Gold Indigo Moon in the shiny gold bag. Doesn’t care for the new food in the new bags. Tried all the varieties, won’t eat them. Manager at PetCo claims it’s the same formula because it says Indigo Moon on the bag. I wrote to the company but haven’t received a reply. They must be overwhelmed wiith complaints. I’m also a safety freak and don’t want any brands that have been on the Pet Food Recall lists. Anyone have success with a grain free dry food that’s safe?

  4. I have a cat that throws up almost daily. Has been to the vet and cannot pinpoint the problem. I am looking for a cat food to try and switch her over to and I’ve that a try. Any suggestions?

  5. I have always fed fed my three kitties the highest quality and highest rated foods – Indigo Moon among them – but had a frequent unfinished meal and vomiting situation with it. I switched a few months ago to Blue Wilderness Chicken Formula for Indoor Cats and the vomiting has subsided dramatically. Also, very few hairballs. And my kitties clean their bowls.

  6. Tried the new formulation with my 4 year old Siamese after success with the previous dry foods. This new formula is a disaster for my cat. He threw it up each time I fed it to him and I’ve thrown out the remainder of the bag. Though I keep my cat on wet food mostly, I supplement it with dry at times, and I’m now using Orijen and Acana with much success. I highly recommend them and CAUTION ANYONE FEEDING THEIR PET A FOOD BY SOLID GOLD.

  7. Our 3 kitties had been enjoying IM for a couple of years. Then I went to buy it one day and the bag had changed. The woman at the pet food store said the formula was the same (although the size of the bag was smaller for the same price) so I got it. Our female, Zelda, started vomiting every day and finally refused to eat it. We were about to take her in, but she started eating ANYTHING but IM. That’s when we discovered on this site that the formula HAD been changed. Since one of our cats got fat on it, we now have to find something healthy they all can eat. We are done with Solid Gold…too bad.

  8. I have had only positive results from Indigo Moon. My two kitties have been eating both recipes since they were 5 months old. Now, at 1 year old, they continue to love it, despite the updates recently made. I did notice one of two formulas reduced the bag weight without changing the price. This was annoying, but not enough reason to switch. My girls are picky and are princesses, so I often feed them a mixture of both formulas. They also get a can of wet food a day to share (i.e. about 1.5 oz each, 2x/day). They love IM and I will continue to feed them IM, though I am still looking for other brands to try as I believe it is good to provide constant variety/mixing and variations. They are healthy, happy, energetic, and any vomits are few and random, can’t ever be linked to the food.

  9. my cats were on Indigo Moon also until they changed the formula. Vomiting diarrhea and no appetite. Almost killed my diabetic cat. If they change formulas they should inform the public! Very angry and broke from the vet bills. Back to DM for me…

  10. Has anyone found a good replacement yet?

  11. Pet Food Ratings, do you have a response to the recent comments about the food? I’m currently in the market for a new dry food because what my cats are on is making their coats dull and coarse. A friend recommended Solid Gold to me because, like my male, her cat is prone to bladder crystals, but hasn’t had any problem on this brand of food.

    • Hi Mary, in a case like this I feel the comments are as important as the review. Many cats are fed Indigo Moon without any issues and are in great health, but comments like those above can show a trend.

  12. i swear almost every brand has recebtly changed their formulas for the worse

  13. I’m trying to find a replacement as well. Please keep me updated with your findings. I’m presently buying small bags of grain free dry food. I’ll let you know my findings as well.
It’s too bad Solid Gold Indigo Moon had to ruin a good thing!

  14. Indigo Moon just changed their formula (for the worse) along with their recent packaging change. I’m now looking for a replacement.

    • The new formula smells very fishy now and my cats won’t touch it. Contacted the company and they said the only change they made was lowering the animal protein content by 4% (because of customer complaints about the food being “too crumbly.” Which has NEVER happened to us in over a decade of feeding IM.) They also said Katzenflocken now has slightly lowered protein too. Looking for a replacement.

  15. I’m currently trying this product for the first time. Two adult female cats have taken to it and really seem to enjoy it. Prior, they were on Chicken Soup for The Cat Lovers Soul Light Cat Formula 18-kb Bag…but one of them always threw up whole kibble. So far, no vomit kibble.
What is the value of the potato in this formula? Do cats really need and eat potato?

  16. I changed the cat food from natural balance to the Solid Gold because may cats vomiting many time after eating the natural balance. I found the Solid Gold because of the shiny bag that actually I like from a store. I gave the Solid Gold to my kitties. They do like it a lot and they do not vomit at all. I have been wondering if this is really nutricious food to give my kitties since I have no knowledge about the ingredients of the cat food. I am so happy to find this informative website. I can keep giving the Solid Gold to them. Thank you!

  17. I switched from natural balance to this food (yes properly) and both my cats who are not vomitters started vomiting multiple times a day. I took the food back to the store and asked them to report it cause it clearly was tainted somehow. Started feeding something else and have seen only 1 sick in 2 years. Ideally I LOVED the food but that was terrifying.
