Taste of the WildTaste of the Wild is another grain-free entry into the dog food market, and their idea is a simple one: return your dog’s diet to how it is naturally supposed to be.

It really works with this food. First, look at the top two ingredients – bison and venison! Those are certainly top quality ingredients rarely found in dog food. They certainly aren’t the cheapest either. They also use chicken and ocean fish meals to help prop up the protein percentage, which is very high. This would make an ideal food for active dogs.

For fruits and vegies, this is one of the best. These are not only great sources for vitamins, but for fiber and carbs as well. My only disappointment is that they didn’t throw in a fish oil or flaxseed for a fat source, but they do have a fish meal ingredient here and that should help with those Omega fatty acids.

This is highly recommended.

Where to buy?

What’s good about this food….

Grain-free, high protein percentage, good meat sources, eggs, lots of fruits and vegetables.

….and what’s not so good.

Nothing.

  1. Just started my 2 papillon mixes on Taste of the Wild. They have had stomach and digestive issues since we adopted them. (I have been using another grain free brand from the grocery store for the past year but I have to supplement it with meat to entice them to eat it .)
Both of my pups love the flavor (roasted fowl) and their poops have been great!. Bought their new food at the locally owned Ace Hardware.

  2. Looking to start my new puppy on the right food. He will be joining us in one week so I want to do this right. After my last two Goldens were raised on cheap food and ended up with many health issues, I would like your advice on which large breed puppy food to try. He is a Golden Retriever/Irish Setter. Any help would be greatly appreciated I am leaning toward TOTW High Prairie Puppy with Bison and Venison

    • Hi Cathy, any of the foods on our top rated list are a solid start. Also have a look at Canidae Large Breed Puppy and Earthborn. You can also rotate brands, or supplement a dry diet with wet or fresh. Many options.

  3. I’ve bought Taste of the Wild Wetlands, can you tell me if thats good too?
I Know my dogs like High Prairie, but wiht the shipping charges it was more expensive, so I decided to try the Wild Wetland.
I hope they like it too. 🙂

    • Yes, it’s very good. It’s based on duck which is a decent lean meat, backed up with chicken. You can always rotate recipes and brands.

  4. Taste of the Wild is owned by Diamond Foods. They outsource ingredients from China. This is no longer a recommended brand.

    • Hi Elizabeth, the Diamond Pet foods products are all made in the USA, they label their products “Made in USA” so they have to ensure the 100% of the ingredients are produced in USA, i dont think they import ingredients from China, do you have a source of that information ?

  5. i have been feeding my pit bull terrier “Duke” Taste of the Wild since he was about 11 weeks old. He loves the food so much he actually wakes me up every morning at about 6 goes out side and will then sit at his bowl till i feed him. I would not even think about changing his food, despite the cost.

    • I feed my American pit bull terrier both of them every single one they love it! Taste of the wild is made to be switched up with out up setting the dogs stomach the small breed has alot of protein my male is 9 months and 55 pounds i like this dog they love it

  6. I’m so glad to hear taste of the wild is gray for your pooch! I’ve been looking at this website and it has all the evidence I need. I used to be feeing my 3 dogs one 7 year old, 1 year old, and a 5 month old puppy. And I’ve been feeding them beneful for the past few months.(thank god not for that long) When I heard dogs could die from that brand I immediately stopped buying it. I was looking for a great brand food and my friend Eduardo recommended Taste of the wild. I wanted to make sure the food was really good in protein and it was! Now my babies and feast on their kibble without any worry.

  7. I recently started feeding taste of the wild to all of my dogs except one. My female had some fairly large bladder stones earlier this year. The vet recommended that I feed her Royal Canin urinary SO. I have been giving it to her since then. I’m sure it’s not a very good quality food especially to be so expensive! Do you think it would be ok to switch her to Taste of the wild ? I just don’t want her to have these problems again.

  8. !st time posting but maybe someone can benefit from this. We have 2 large dogs, both rescues and eating TOTW kibble for 3 years. We switch between flavors and haven’t had any reactions. Our youngest (3) GSD has fleas but it doesnt seem as though our 6 yr old is as bothered by them. She does not scratch incessantly like he does. I am now starting to look at allergies for him possibly with TOTW kibble. We have always fed them low grain kibble, and I have done research before switching which has only been twice since we adopted him (previous was Newman’s as a puppy). With all the recalls, this is taking so much more time and then the “switch-over” period can be, well, not simple. I am now looking into Orijen, Flint River Ranch and Blue Buffalo. We need to buy at any one of the 3 major retailers or through Amazon and I was wondering if anyone out there has another suggested brand that is mid to high price for kibble available from a major retailer? I can’t commit until I research it but my poor guy is scratching all the time and the girlie isn’t. Has to be the food… We are in the Eastern U.S. and RAW isn’t an option.

  9. Have you seen the recent 1-star ratings on Amazon for this dog food? Do you think it’s all from a single bad batch or are they starting to cut corners? I filtered the reviews to only show 1-star reviews and it seems like they are all recent. The ratings on chewy.com are also good, but the bad reviews on Amazon are scary.

    • Hi Ali, I had a quick look on Amazon for Taste of the Wild High Prairie Bison and Venison, and it seems the reviews are generally very good:

Taste of the Wild High Prairie reviews on Amazon

You’ll find all pet foods seem to have a range of reviews, even the really poor quality foods have rave reviews. Many people assume a food’s good because their pet eats it, but that doesn’t mean it’s healthy! Pet Food Ratings reviews are based on ingredients and nutrition analysis, as well as constant feedback and research, so we hope that’s more useful than what you read on Amazon ;o)

  10. Hello, I’ve recently started all 3 of my dogs, all rescues, Angel, being 10, Chubbs, being 7, and Hunny, being 3 years old, all simply ravish this dog food! They utterly indulge, and honestly, I believe that with the first 3 ingredients being Bison, Lamb Meal, and Chicken Meal, which, when they are meal form, contain up to 300% more protein & nutrients than just “lamb” or “chicken” listed in the ingredients, they just seem to can’t get enough of it! I hope what I just typed is readable, haha.

Anyways, yes it it a little pricier than the $11.99 Pedigree dog food brand, if you find it at the right place, you can always get the best deals! Even online, I’ve noticed.

The first best thing about this dog food is that it has real, lean meats always as fist ingredients, and always contains forms of antioxidants, whether it’s from raspberry’s, blueberries, and a ton of other great GRAIN FREE ingredients, your dog will probably seriously like. That’s another point, it’s 100% grain free! That means minimal allergic reactions, and maximum protection & meaty taste for Fido.

I know, I must sound like a freakin’ spokesperson or something, but to be honest, I’m a long time dog lover, and I’m just so glad that I could find the truth about dog food, that I just can’t seem share enough of the great details! Honestly though, I haven’t come to see any bad ones, whatsoever, so let me know if there is 🙂 I’m about 100% sure the editor(s) of the site will agree with me. I’ve done my research. 😀

  11. I switched to this brand after a lot of thought and discussion. I have a Collie and a Border Collie. My Collie had been experiencing an extreme deterioration in skin health. His skin was hot, itchy, red and he was losing hair. Switching to Soyfree foods worked for a while and I finally decided grain free was our best option. We found it at Tractor Supply.
It is expensive but worth it. His hair is coming back and he is less itchy. Only itches when bitten by a flea.
The cats were attracted to the food as well. So we started them on the cat food version.

  12. I have four Yorkshire Terriers and my dogs love this food. I swear by it. They have excellent skin and shiny coats. Plus I love the fact that they do offer different flavors you can try, however mine love the Bison and Venison. LOVE IT!

  13. Hello, Taste of the Wild is a super food. Its my favourite!
